The Past and Present of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPR or what is commonly referred to cardiopulmonary\nresuscitation is one of the best emergency procedures that is used when heart\nstop functioning. It has a very high chance of saving lives when it is\nadministered immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This process involves\ncompression of chest<\/a>, which is often used with the help of\nartificial ventilation. It manually preserves the functionability of the brain\nuntil other vital actions are taken to restore patient breathing and the heart\nblood circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article will look at the history of the CPR\ndevelopment and how it has evolved through the ages. Also the article will\naddress how the society and the culture we are living in understands and\ninfluences CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A Brief History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This medical procedure dates back to the 19th<\/sup>\ncentury. One doctor by the name Dr. Silvestre came up with a method which was\nreferred to as artificial ventilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 This method\ndescribed that the patient must be laid on their back. Then their arms should\nbe raised upwards, preferably above the head, so that it can help in aiding\ninhalation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After raising the arms, chest\ncompression follows<\/a> to assist the patient in breathing. The\nmethod dictated that these steps be repeated around a sixteen times, every\nsingle minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As time passed, another technique was done as an\nimprovement Dr. Silvestre\u2019s work. This procedure was somehow same with the\nprevious one only some few changes were made to enhance its success rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The procedure involved the patient laying while\nfacing down and resting on both palms. Their head must be facing sideways. This\nprocess ensured the air is drawn back to the lungs by applying pressure and\nraising the patient\u2019s upper body. This method become fully incorporated and gained\npopularity in the 1950\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As medics got cleverer and more knowledgeable, they\nmade further improvements in a bid to get higher survival rate in cases when\none suffers a cardiac arrest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-20th<\/sup> century, other forms of Cardiopulmonary\nResuscitation were developed<\/a>. It also marked the\nbirth of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. This process got incorporated together\nwith resuscitation chest compressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazingly, this process was first done on an animal\nand since it proved to be a success, it was used on human beings and it ended\nup saving a child. This proved the effectiveness of mouth to mouth\nresuscitation as an effective way to deal with cardiac arrest. It received\ninternational recognition and became the standard procedure in many\ncircumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mouth to mouth CPR was found to be more effective\nwhen it was combined together with the compression of the chest. It was\ndeveloped with the assumption that active ventilation is quite important for\nthe oxygenation of flowing blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the conclusion of its effectiveness was done\nwithout comparing it with chest compression. A lot of research has been done\nover the last decade and proved the assumption that was an error. Chest\ncompression alone has been proved to revive a cardiac arrest victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, one patient on 2011 in a hospital in\nHuston, Texas underwent CPR for over five hours and was stabilized. That\npatient underwent a\nsuccessful heart surgery. That justified the effectiveness\nof the chest compression alone as a mode of preferred CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) has continued\nits advancement over the years. One of the recent changes in approach that has occurred\nlately is focusing more on stimulating the heart rapidly and less on the\nrespiratory aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research have been able to prove that chances of a\npatient surviving are up by over 22% when there rescue focuses on chest\ncompression. Others who perform both the chest compression and focus on the\nrespiratory system recorded very low chances of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, a lot of medical practitioners are a\nbit reluctant in using mouth to mouth resuscitation, thus preferring chest only\nCPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Society & Culture Influences CPR <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. How Public Portrays CPR Successfulness.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In the society we are living, Cardiopulmonary\nResuscitation (CPR) is highly misrepresented in theatre such as movies. They\nshow that the CPR is an effective way or resuscitating someone who is not\nbreathing and with no blood circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In a research that was done over 20 years ago by a\nmedical society, stated that CPR done in the television shows portrays a 75 %\nsuccess rate. With such unrealistic expectations, it has given a high sense of\neffectiveness of CPR to the general public. These expectations have cause the\npublic to give up hope in CPR methods if they do not give the result as seen\nmovies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, when trainings are conducted to people and\npatient on actual rates of survival, their expectations drop. For instance,\nresearch has found that when patients over the age of 60 years are told the\nfacts about survival rate of CPR, their expectations drops from 41% to 22%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With those facts, trainings should be made to the\ngeneral public in order to have them know the actual success rate if they at\none point need CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
